Japanese Web Browsing

Disclaimer:
I am not fluent in any language except Australian English.
However, these are a few tips that have proven useful to me for browsing Japanese web sites.

To view Japanese sites on the web without having a Japanese PC (Windows)
or a Japanese Mac, you need to add Japanese extensions to your browser.
Note that this only allows the display of Japanese characters, it does not translate them.
Go to www.microsoft.com
or www.netscape.com to download them.
Windows users can simply do a Windows update and select Japanese extensions from the list.

Once you can display the characters, you will need to be able to recognise some of them.
Here are some common ones that have helped me.
The Japanese encoding should only be looked at after you have loaded the Japanese extensions.

Japanese dating system

The Japanese year 1 started in 1926 AD.
So 1970, 1975, 1980 are years 45, 50, 55 in Japan.
Likewise, a year 48 Celica was built in 1973 AD.
Japanese year + 1925 = AD year.

Japanese search engines

www.yahoo.co.jp
www.google.co.jp

Use cut and paste to copy the Japanese word you want to search for from another page (eg セリカ) and paste it into the search field in the search engine.

Japanese auctions

auctions.yahoo.co.jp
Cut and paste words from this page into the small text line near the top left of the page.

Japanese translations

www.excite.co.jp/world/textp
The selector in the middle should be in the upper position for English to Japanese and in the lower position for Japanese to English.
Paste your text into the big panel on the left. Click on the button in the middle (just above an orange arrow) to show the translation in a panel on the right.
